Press Statement dated 3 December 2018

It is of great concern that the recognition agreement of the Unions have been withdrawn due to the fact it lapsed during 2017.

The SAPTU/NTEU alliance rejects the draconian way in which the Management of the University of Johannesburg cancelled all organizational rights by way of a months’ notice which we regard as irregular.  Neither section 18 of the LRA nor section 23 of the Constitution impedes the conclusion of Collective Agreements between an employer and a minority Union where a Threshold agreement between the same employer and a majority union consist.  It is our submission that not mere percentages should be the guiding principle in recognition but the influence which the above Unions exerts in the workplace.

The above Unions will resort to all the legal channels available to them to protect their constitutional rights as minorities.

We also wish to request Trade Unions at other Universities to strongly support us to restore our rights above the rejection of not being bullied into submission.
