Press Statement dated 7 December 2018

The Public Servants Association (PSA) welcomes long-awaited changes in the South African Police Service (SAPS) brought about by the announcement by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele’s, announcement of the promotion of about 28 000 SAPS officers by March 2019.

“This is a step in the right direction to recognise the work of SAPS officers. This action by the Minister will assist with restoring confidence in the Police Service,” said PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks.

The process will see about 68 000 officers being promoted over the next three years. Officers from the special task force, national intervention unit and other specialised units would also be regraded. About R 2 billion is needed to accomplish this and the Minister is confident that budget cuts on other aspects will ensure that this is achieved.

“The PSA applauds the effort by the Minister to turnaround the operations in SAPS. Employees, especially those whose jobs come with a high level of personal sacrifice, need to be treated in a manner that will give them confidence to perform better in their duties,” said Mr Fredericks.
