Press Statement dated 7 December 2018
The Public Servants Association is disturbed by disclosures made in Parliament by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, revealing that 143 mortuary fridges are currently not functioning properly in 80 districts.
“The situation presents a significant risk to the health and safety of employees working at these facilities. It is simply unacceptable that some of these fridges have been dysfunctional for 8 years, without any efforts by the Department to rectify the situation. The PSA is of the view that this grave situation was brought about by poor governance. The employer is not living up to the Batho Pele principles in caring about its own employees or the public. This is also a clear indication that the Health and Safety Regulations are not adhered to by the employer,” said PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks.
“The PSA is calling upon the Minister of Health to remedy this situation as a matter of urgency to ensure that all these fridges are repaired and to ensure that all regions have adequate working fridges,” said Mr Fredericks.
