southafricalogoTMG Digital reports that on Tuesday prison warders at the Johannesburg prison colloquially known as "Sun City" embarked on a strike, demanding that Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha should intervene to hear their grievances.

Male prisoners at the prison’s medium B section were not being transported to court.  The warders’ complaints include that the Department of Correctional Services has failed to properly compensate prison officials who qualify for benefits such as overtime pay‚ a danger allowance‚ new uniforms and promotions.  They also claim the prison is short staffed and thus they are working under “serious danger conditions”.  The warders‚ who decided to vent their frustration peacefully‚ said they have been fighting over the same issues for the past decade.  They have also decided to ignore unions “because they sell us out.”
