education90City Press reports that, in damning findings, the final report by Professor John Volmink’s team reveals that ‘jobs-for-cash’ in schools is endemic and claims the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) is holding the education system hostage to political processes.

City Press has obtained a finalised copy of the report, which contains a first-time admission by Sadtu that the sale of teachers’ and principals’ jobs for cash, sex and “other favours” is “widespread and underreported”.  The report makes a slew of recommendations about how the education system can be freed from Sadtu’s grip, including a ban on principals and education officials being office bearers in political parties.  The report, commissioned by the basic education minister, was due to be released last week, but Sadtu is apparently putting stumbling blocks in the way of its dissemination.
