Business Times reports that a behind-the-scenes plan by an employer association to oust the general secretary of the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) has been described as an attempt to topple a black man in charge.
The claim has drawn an angry rebuttal. A letter written by the chairman of the South African Engineers' and Founders' Association, Ross Williams, to the board of the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa) proposes that the MEIBC general secretary, Thulani Mthiyane, be suspended. Irvin Jim, general secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), said it was because Mthiyane was black, but Williams retorted that Jim's allegation was offensive and untrue. Jim suggested that an application for an increase in levies, paid by employers and employees to the bargaining council, had led to the move against Mthiyane.
