numReuters reports that an internal National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) document indicates that the union will demand a wage increase of 20% per year for the next two years in upcoming talks with Anglo American Platinum (Amplats).

The existing three-year wage deal between the platinum companies and unions expires at the end of June.  According to Amplats, the NUM represents about 20% of its workforce, while the majority belongs to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).  But the NUM has the majority at Amplats' key Mogalakwena mine, the company's most profitable asset.  Amcu’s wage demands are not yet known, but will also likely be double digit.
