TimesLive reports that suspended national police commissioner Riah Phiyega will finally know her fate when the Claassen Board of Inquiry, which is investigating her fitness to hold office, releases its findings by the end of next month.
The inquiry was triggered by the Farlam Commission report, which made adverse findings about the police chief's conduct following the 2012 killing of 34 miners by the police in Marikana. Meantime, Phiyega has asked the Pretoria High Court to set aside the inquiry’s conclusion that the police leadership misled it about how the police implemented their tactical plan on 16 August 2012, and concealed that the plan had been hastily implemented without "inputs" from the specialist public order policing unit. Phiyega has argued that the conclusion was "irrational" and was contradicted by evidence.
