TMG Digital reports that the fund set up to assist the "brave South African journalists who lost their jobs for standing up for media freedom" stood at almost R280,000 on Wednesday morning.
More than three times the target was raised in less than 24 hours. At 8am on Wednesday, $19,041 had been raised by 220 donors just 21 hours after News24 editor Adriaan Basson set up an account on Generosity.com (https://www.generosity.com/fundraising/friends-of-sabc-journalists). Eight journalists are jobless after being fired by the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). They had spoken out against a decision by the public broadcaster’s chief operating officer‚ Hlaudi Motsoeneng‚ to ban news coverage of violent protests.
