mildredoliphantThe Citizen reports that, addressing farmworkers in De Doorns outside Cape Town, Labour Minister Oliphant said on Wednesday that it was important for farmworkers to know their rights to reduce the chances of being exploited and abused.

She went on to say that most farmworkers ran into trouble because they did not know their labour rights, while unions had become too weak to offer effective assistance.  The minister indicated that the ‘National Know Your Rights Campaign’ was meant to make workers aware of their rights and to give them the tools to extract maximum value out of them.  The De Doorns area was a hotbed of violent protests by farmworkers in 2012 and 2013.
