Moneyweb reports that National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu confirmed on Tuesday that the union’s 15,000 members working at Eskom will go on a full-blown strike on Wednesday.
This will follow a strike at three Eskom power stations on Monday. With NUM members working at power stations nationwide, Mammburu expects the impact on Eskom operations to be “huge.” He explained that workers would be striking “for the right to strike” and were ready for the consequences since it was “for the right reason.” Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said the NUM has not notified Eskom of its intention to strike and even if it had, the strike would be unprotected due to procedural failures as well as the fact that Eskom operations have been classified as essential services, which precludes workers from striking lawfully. He indicated that Eskom has contingency plans and would rely on the 32,000 Eskom workers who are not NUM members to keep operations on track.
According to Mammburu, the NUM would meet Eskom management at 10 am on Wednesday to hear whether it has revised its offer. Phasiwe could not confirm this meeting
