EWN reports that the Communication Workers Union (CWU) says if Telkom persists with its no-work-no-pay policy, the union will intensify its current strike.
Earlier this month, about 870 workers affiliated to the union went on strike over a wage dispute. On Sunday, Telkom released a statement warning that workers who downed tools on 1 August would not be paid on 25 August. Telkom’s Gugulethu Maqetuka indicated that the company still needed to do a manual audit that would help distinguish between those who were off sick and those who are on strike. The strikers would be paid by 7 September once the audit has been concluded. However, the CWU’s Aubrey Tshabalala said that by not paying workers on time, Telkom was violating its contractual obligation.
