daThe New Age reports that the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday said it had written to Parliament requesting that the leadership of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) should account for its role in the “jobs for cash” scandal.

In May, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga released the findings of the task team set up in 2014 to investigate allegations that teachers and departmental officials were involved in the selling of educator posts.  DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education Gavin Davis on Monday said “the President of Sadtu, Mr Magope Maphila, must account to Parliament for his union’s role in the ‘Jobs for Cash’ bribery and corruption racket.  In particular, he must commit to taking action against all Sadtu members implicated and put in place measures to prevent the buying and selling of teachers’ posts in the future.”  However Sadtu’s Nomusa Cembi pointed out that the union itself had not been directly implicated in any wrongdoing and said that Maphila would not be going to Parliament.
