SABC News writes that work is well underway to establish a trade union federation to rival the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).
The so-called ‘Nine Plus’ unions which broke away from Cosatu last year met on Saturday in the North West. Among them are six former Cosatu unions in the North West. Stephen Faulkner, Convener of the New Federation indicated: "On the 15th or 16th March 2017, you are going to see at least 2000 worker representatives, not just workers off the street but worker representatives coming together to form a new federation that will be characterised by its militancy, its democracy and its independence." Saturday’s meeting was part of the process of deciding on the name of the new federation.
