The New Age reports that the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is working with the police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the US to crack down on the spiralling number of bogus colleges.
The department’s Dr Shaheeda Essack advised that the department had cracked down on a number of bogus colleges. “There are several we have closed. While some were shut outright, others had agreed to shut down on their own, while others agreed to terminate their programme offerings,” Essack indicated. She revealed that a recent trend identified by the department was that a number of online operators were committing internet fraud by purporting to offer degrees in 15 days using the name and logo of the department. Three bogus institutions that offered courses online have already been shut down due to this. In its list of the bogus colleges, the department revealed that most of the websites appear to be based in the US and in the UK.
