The New Age reports that hundreds of travellers using the Beitbridge border post were left stranded over the weekend as immigration officers reportedly embarked on a go-slow. The industrial action is said to have started on Friday.
One couple travelling from Bulawayo on Saturday were stuck from 9am to 5.30 pm on the South African side. After the husband’s passport was stamped, the next person to be served was his wife, “but the moment she got there she was told the computer was no longer working. But she saw the officer pull out the plug. Thereafter, we had to wait another hour.” Musina Chamber of Commerce chairperson Obert Likhele visited the border on Sunday after getting a tip-off. He reported: “It seems there is a go-slow on the South African side, we are not aware of what the issues are… we found the queues extremely long and people milling around frustrated.” A Department of Home Affairs spokesman said he was not aware of the situation.
