News24 reports that Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane and Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza on Monday met families of the three trapped Lily Mine workers.
A meeting was held with the mine’s management about progress made to secure funding to resume the operation to retrieve the bodies of Yvonne Mnisi, Pretty Nkambule, and Solomon Nyirenda from the coal mine, the department said in a statement. The mine’s owners, Vantage Goldfields, indicated they were in talks with potential investors. The department asked about the progress that had been made on providing compensation to the families. Zwane and Mabuza said they would approach neighbouring mines to find work for those workers left jobless by the closure of the Lily Mine and neighbouring Barbrook mine. The department also said the Mpumalanga government had agreed to provide food parcels to the affected families.
