Netwerk24 reports that eight former farmworkers employed by Athol Trollip, executive mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, were ready on Monday to testify in Grahamstown in the civil case against Trollip brought by Lawrence Troon, former ANC councillor.
But the case was postponed without any evidence being given. Knight Mali, spokesperson for the workers, said the case arose out of statements by the workers in which they accused Trollip, inter alia, of abuses of human rights and labour laws, abuse, inhuman living conditions and child labour. The case was postponed for the purposes of further legal consultations by Troon seeing that more former workers have come forward with allegations. Trollip said he was disappointed with the postponement because he has been waiting for a year for the case to begin.
